Stage 1 chiller plant upgrade — installation of a new Dunham-Bush water-cooled chiller, buffer tank, pumps, cooling towers and BMS replacing the existing end-of-life central plant
Project story
QEG was engaged by Alphacool (Townsville) on a design-and-construct basis to deliver Stage 1 of the chiller plant upgrade at Northtown Shopping Centre, 280-282 Flinders Street, Townsville. We produced the new plant layout, sized and procured a Dunham-Bush water-cooled chiller, Masterflow buffer tank, Wilo/Masterflow pumps with VSDs and Evapco cooling towers, and coordinated the demolition, rigging, electrical, controls and pipework subtrades around an operating retail centre. The works were sequenced with a temporary hire cooling tower to maintain cooling during the changeover, with chiller commissioning achieved in October 2018 and new cooling towers brought online in mid-November 2018 ready for the summer trading period. QEG also coordinated the gas detection, side-stream filtration, automated chemical water treatment and BMS (Schneider) point-to-point testing across the new plant.
Equipment installed
- 1 x Dunham-Bush water-cooled screw chiller (Stage 1; second chiller position pre-piped for a future unit)
- 1 x Masterflow chilled water buffer tank
- Chilled water and condenser water pumps (Masterflow, with backup Wilo selections in package) on VSDs
- 2 x Evapco MTT 18-4L12 cooling towers with side-stream filtration
- Schneider BMS upgrade with new system diagram and points list
- Bellinger MSSB and motor control gear
- Refrigerant gas detection system, automated chemical water treatment and make-up water system
- Fan coil unit and supply/exhaust fans for plant room
