Northtown Complex, 280 Flinders Street
Design-and-construct installation of a new central chilled water plant for a retail complex in Townsville, comprising a Dunham-Bush DCLC450 magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller, two Evapco cooling towers, five Masterflow pump sets, Schneider Electric BMS and controls

Project story
QEG was engaged by Alphacool as mechanical engineering subcontractor for the Northtown Complex chiller plant upgrade in Townsville. QEG evaluated the consultant's design and, having liaised with the original design consultant, re-engineered the plant layout to significantly reduce the overall footprint, delivering usable space savings and services infrastructure cost reductions whilst maintaining design integrity. QEG's design-and-construct scope included supply and installation of a Dunham-Bush DCLC450 magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller, two Evapco MTT 18-4L12 cooling towers, five Masterflow pump sets (primary chilled water, condenser water, and three secondary chilled water circuits), a Masterflow buffer tank, Schneider Electric VSDs, side-stream filtration, an AirDesign FCU for plant room cooling, a gas detection system, and a QEG-designed MSSB switchboard with Schneider ASN BMS control integration.
Equipment installed
- 1 x Dunham-Bush DCLC450MDTM612E magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller (approx. 1,500 kW)
- 2 x Evapco MTT 18-4L12 cooling towers (CT-1 and CT-2)
- 1 x primary chilled water pump — Masterflow (PCHWP-1, 15 kW, 44.8 L/s)
- 1 x condenser water pump — Masterflow (CDWP-1, 30 kW, 86.0 L/s)
- 3 x secondary chilled water pumps — Masterflow (SCHWP-1/2/3, 5.5–30 kW)
- 1 x Masterflow buffer tank
- Schneider Electric VSDs
- Evapco side-stream filtration
- 1 x AirDesign MINItherm SME19-H-5M-0H-L FCU (plant room cooling)
- QEG MSSB-1 switchboard (motor control and protection)
- Schneider ASN BMS with plant monitoring and control
- Gas Detection Australia gas detection system
“Quantum Engineering Group delivered tremendous value to both Alphacool and our client whilst conducting itself in a respectful manner to the design concept and maintaining an excellent relationship with the original design consultant.”
