Tasmanian Botanics Medicinal Cannabis Greenhouse
Design and delivery of central chilled and heating water plant for a 10-greenhouse medicinal cannabis facility — 2 x 1,620 kW air-cooled chillers, 2,500 kW condensing boiler, 100 kL chilled-water and 1 ML heating-water buffer tanks, prefabricated pump skids and 20 AHUs

QEG was engaged by Powerplants Australia (PPA) to design and deliver the central mechanical services for the Tasmanian Botanics medicinal cannabis glasshouse facility — ten greenhouses each requiring 350 kW of cooling and 350 kW of heating. We provided the concept design, detailed design and full construction package including high-efficiency VSD screw chillers, a condensing gas boiler, a 100 kL chilled-water buffer tank and a 1 ML heating-water buffer tank, together with prefabricated primary and secondary chilled-water and heating-water pump skids, 20 air handling units and all associated valves, fittings, controls and MSSB. Pump skids and pipework header assemblies were prefabricated in our factory to minimise on-site installation risk and program. The central plant BMS was integrated with the Priva greenhouse control system.

- 1 x 2,500 kW Simons condensing gas boiler (HHW 80/60 °C) with gas-train and CO/CO2/NOx-controlled flue mixing box
- Presscon nitrogen-blanket expansion system
- 100 kL insulated chilled-water buffer tank (R1.7)
- 1 ML insulated heating-water buffer tank (R1.3), 13 m diameter
- Prefabricated primary chilled-water VSD pump skid
- Prefabricated secondary chilled-water VSD pump skid
- Prefabricated primary and secondary heating-water VSD pump skids
- BAC cooling towers (condenser-water heat rejection)
- 12 x prefabricated AHUs with EC plug fans in stainless-steel holding frames
- Cooling, heating and condensate pipework — majority prefabricated in copper (Aquatherm/PPR for buried HDPE reticulation)
- Mechanical services switchboard (MSSB)
- Central plant BMS integrated with Priva greenhouse controls
