Treasury Building, Canberra — Base Building Refurbishment (Cooling Towers and Mechanical Services)
Replacement of 4 off cooling towers, AHU motor upgrades and associated condenser water pipework on PPR (Aquatherm) at the Commonwealth Treasury Building

Project story
QEG, in joint venture with CBR Mechanical, was engaged by Cockram Construction as part of the Treasury Building Base Building Refurbishment to replace the four end-of-life cooling towers, the associated condenser water pipework, and a schedule of high-efficiency AHU and pump motors. The condenser water pipework was executed in Aquatherm PPR (manufactured and prefabricated in Germany based on QEG's 3D design model) in lieu of steel, giving a non-corrosive, fully recyclable, lower-friction and naturally insulating system. Cooling towers were installed on prefabricated concrete piers (inspected and certified prior to delivery) above the existing plantroom roof. QEG was responsible for design engineering, 3D drawings, project management and O&M manuals; CBR provided site supervision, construction and ongoing service.
Equipment installed
- 4 x replacement cooling towers (supplied by others, installed by QEG/CBR JV) on prefabricated concrete piers and anti-vibration pads
- New cooling tower switchboard works, wiring and commissioning
- Aquatherm Blue Pipe PPR condenser water pipework (prefabricated in Germany from QEG's 3D model)
- 4 x 300 mm isolation valves added at CT enclosure for independent isolation and drainage (Variation 001)
- High-efficiency AHU and pump motors (supply scope; installation later varied — see Variation 004)
- Side-stream cyclonic self-cleaning condenser water filter (Masterflow Solutions — proposed option)
