Full stainless-steel AHU rebuild in a live food manufacturing facility

Project story

QEG was engaged directly by Kellogg (Aust.) Pty Ltd to replace the severely deteriorated fresh air handling unit HVA-3054 at their Botany food manufacturing plant. The existing AHU enclosure showed heavy corrosion throughout — panels, louvers, and structural steel were all heavily rusted. QEG's scope included demolition of the existing panel structure (5.58 tonnes of scrap removed), assessment and repair of the existing structural steel frame, surface treatment and repainting, and full reconstruction with new SS304 stainless steel components. The new AHU comprises a Chicago DWDI centrifugal fan (SS304, 55,000 l/s @ 800 Pa, 75 kW motor with SKF bearings), a new switchboard panel reusing the existing Allen Bradley VSD, an FM Global-approved PIR panel enclosure with 100mm KS100CS PIR core and stainless steel skins on both sides, SS304 ductwork (2.0mm double-skin with 25mm insulation), a Holyoake SS304 weatherproof louver, a Riley Air SS304 curtain fire damper (2700×1660×200mm) at the riser shaft, Camfil pre-filters and Merv 11 final bag filters in custom steel filter frames, and spring vibration isolators. Approved variations included heavy-gauge SS304 ductwork upgrade (VQ002, $27,809) and the riser shaft fire damper (VQ003, $18,390). Installation required two crane lifts and was executed while the Botany plant remained in operation, with rigorous COVID-safe work practices and Kellogg site induction compliance throughout.
