Project story

QEG was engaged directly by Unilever to replace two ageing Budge Ellis bottle-type rooftop cooling towers at the North Rocks factory. The existing towers served the chiller condenser water system with a combined capacity of 738 kW. QEG provided full design and construct services including engineering design, verification of cooling tower design parameters, workshop and construction drawings, procurement of two new Shinwa PCT0909-P3-L counterflow cooling towers (370 kW each, 16.1 l/s each), a new Baker Bloc BB100-26 condenser water pump to resolve an NPSH shortfall identified during design, fabrication and supply of a new structural steel platform with FRP grating, side stream filtration system, all condenser water pipework from pump to CTs, and cranage coordination for equipment removal and installation. The new cooling towers and skid were crane-lifted onto the rooftop over a weekend to minimise disruption to the operating factory.

Equipment installed

  • 2 x Shinwa PCT0909-P3-L counterflow cooling towers (370 kW each, 16.1 l/s each, 2.2 kW fan motors)
  • 1 x Baker Bloc BB100-26 condenser water pump (15 kW)
  • 1 x fabricated structural steel platform with FRP grating
  • 1 x side stream filtration system (1.92 kW)
  • Condenser water pipework from pump to cooling towers
  • Make-up water supply reconnection
